Robert Phillips posted an article: Do High Rankings Mean More Traffic? which echoed some of the same findings I'd reported in an article of mine: Good SERP Ranking is NOT Enough several months ago.
Step back a few clicks and you'll come up with a more generic, higher-level question: what does work? What is the key to creating a successful Internet Business that can, at some point, provide you with enough income to survive and even prosper?
Back in a previous job, I worked as a network engineer and then later as a network engineer manager at a network and systems integration company. We all took training and various certifications such as the Cisco exams. Often, the questions on these exams were multiple choice and more than one answer would appear to be correct. One of the methods that proved to be a successful way of approaching these exams, which tend to be very tricky, was to eliminate the wrong, or more incorrect answers, as opposed to trying to pick the right answer directly. For some reason, it's easer to say choice A is possibly right, but it's not as right as choice C, so eliminate choice A.
How does this relate to an Internet Business? Easy, the one biggest way to not succeed is to not try. By not doing anything, you will most definitely fail.
Don't worry about all the things I talk about, or the guys in my BlogRoll talk about. Things like SERPs, Conversion Ratios, Multivariate Testing, product creation, etc. It can be too much. It can present too many variables and too many possibilities. It can be paralyzing. Just get starting doing something you love. Even if you love something obscure, make a web site or a blog and start posting to it. Take those first few steps and you'll automatically increase your chances of success by an infinite amount.
Remember, failure is guaranteed if you take no action. Success is only possible if you take action.
If you've taken those first steps and you're not finding the success you envisioned, start implementing some of the things I mentioned before. Try something different. Take a different approach. Get some help. Each thing you try improves your chances of success by an infinate amount.
You have to keep taking action. You have to keep learning and trying. Maybe you start all over 200 times, but on the 201st try you finally succeed. You'll be glad you hung in there and kept going.
So persevere!
Until Next Time,
Fred
