Are you scared to think of something bazaar, original, or unique? Fear keeps us from trying and if we don't try, we don't have any chance whatsoever of succeeding. The failure of never trying is a much greater failure than the failure of trying and failing. In fact, in the act of trying and failing you've learned something and your next attempt or endeavor will have a higher probability of success.
In Zero Limits, Dr. Joe Vitale says that he was afraid to publish his best selling book The Attractor Factor because of what people would think of his spiritual message. A friend who had previously read the manuscript let the cat out of the bag so to speak and told a room full of seminar goers about it. The rest is history. Joe's sold a boat load of The Attractor Factor books and there's possibly a movie going to be made about it.
Look at some common businesses and products and think of how they would have been perceived a few years before they were introduced. Take a new business in California called FlexPetz. FlexPetz rents dogs. Yep - I said they RENT DOGS! Now that's not something I would have EVER thought of. And if I did think of, I would have expected to be laughed at. But, it will probably be a huge success. What's important here is that Marlena Cervantes was not afraid to start the company. She wasn't afraid of what people would say or think. She didn't let fear stop her. By the way, she prefers to think of it as a time share dog ownership rather than a rent-a-dog service.
FlexPetz fills a need that many, ok most, people would never have seen. Similar to pet day care, it's a little outside the realm of the average guy on the street. However, there's a need for it, and money to be made providing it.
Bill Gates and Steven Jobs changed the world. What if they'd been scared to try? Are your (and my) ideas any less valid? No.
Take the Wright Brothers story for example. They changed the world too. This could be a Larry the Cable Guy story. Two bicycle makers trying to fly! "We was just sitting around one day and after a few beers Orville said 'hey Wilbur, let's take one of them gliders we built and strap an engine on it and see what happens... I'll even let you take the first ride.'". Actually, the Wright Brothers were very scientific and their success was the result of continuous effort, research, knowledge, and never, ever giving up. But, think of what a preposterous idea building a flying machine was to the average person in 1903. The Wright Brothers were not afraid to try. Look at the airplane and aviation industry today and think about how silly those two bicycle makers must have looked to some out there on the sands at Kitty Hawk, NC in the early 1900's. Doesn't look too silly a little over a hundred years later does it?
Don't be afraid to come out of the closet and show the world your ideas!
Sincerely,
Fred Black
