We just sold our house and have boxes piled up everywhere in our new house. While cleaning out my garage, I came across a lot of things that I'd forgotten about. Some I kept, and some I got rid of. Of the things I kept, I found several tools that I'd forgotten about; tools that I would have used if they'd been where I could have seen them.
I suspect that a lot of Internet Marketing and Internet Business owners have the same issue of buying stuff and letting it collect "digital dust". It's tempting when just starting out to buy everything that has potential to help you build traffic to your website, build your subscriber list, boost conversion rates, automate sales, build links, etc. Some of the things I've purchased are really good, and of course, some are not. Am I using all the tools that I've purchased that are good? No. Just this morning, I came across one that I hadn't used in a while (Hermusa). I cranked it up and let it do its thing for a few of my sites.
How do we keep this from happening? Make a system that reminds you to do these things. It can be as simple as a daily list, a weekly list, and a monthly list. If a task on the list is more than a one step item, you should have a list of steps to perform that task on a separate sheet of paper. This may seem silly and overkill for something that you do on a regular basis and can do in your sleep, but trust me, it's essential for being able to step away from your business and have it continue. If you have employees, interns, or helpers of some type, this gives them guidance on how to do a task so that you're not constantly repeating it to them over and over again. Even if you do everything yourself, its good insurance to have written (and printed out) systems in place incase you're sick, injured, or just wake up one morning and decide it's time to get someone else to do the work!
So, take some time to find those things you've forgotten that you purchased. If they're good tools, add them to your system(s) and use them!
Until next time,
Fred
