Stopping Spam in your Blog

If your blog is like mine, it gets really targeted by spammers who send tons of comment and trackback spam. I recently installed Akismet (http://akismet.com) to control the spam. It seems to do a really good job.

Here's how to install the Akismet Spam Filter plugin.
It's available for Wordpress and Movable Type as well as a few other things.

• You will need a API key (free) from Word Press (even if you're using Movable Type), if you don't have one just go to http://wordpress.com/signup and sign up for an account (blog is not necessary). Your key will be emailed to you once you confirm your registration.
  
  
• If you're using Word Press, download from the main download page and install the plugin.
  
  
• If you're using Movable Type...
  
  
  
  • Go to the main download page
    
  • At the Bottom Click On "Other Versions"
    
    
  • Under the "Other Application Plugins" you'll find the MT-Akismet link and the Documentation Link (the official Akismet plugin for Movable Type).
    
    
  • This download is in tar.gz format, if you can't use it, I zipped the contents and placed them here: Akismet-1.1.zip. I'll try to keep this current if the version changes, but you'll want to verify that it is current.
    
    
  • Follow the installation instruction in the documentation.
    
  
  
• Once you install Akismet you will want to disable any other spam filter plugins you have running.
