Google Penguin = Pain...

Google Penguin = Pain...

There's been a lot of yelling and cussing about Google's "Penguin" update that was rolled out the last week or so of April 2012. And rightly so: it stinks!

Panda (a previous Google update) didn't affect me or my sites. Penguin has hit me hard.

It's hit in another way too: as a consumer I now find my searches on Google are much less useful. I've been using Bing for searches more often now, with better and more useful results.

For instance... I have a site that sells blue glass bottles. Gone from the several #1 rankings I had in Google. Buried so deep it's crazy... how do you explain going from #1 or #2 to #300? How do you explain sites that now occupy the first page of Google's results that don't sell the product? At least one says it does, but when you go there it does not. Several are wholesalers (not useful to a consumer at all). Some are large retailers that do not have that product (again not useful). Some even make no sense at all.

Now take my experience and multiply by about 1 million because it's not just blue bottles, it's across the board.

My wife has a site that sells a children's creative movement DVD, gone now on Google... crazy.

Is Bing the Answer?
If Google is trying to improve search results for their users, then "Penguin" falls flat on its face. They've thrown the baby out with the bath water so to speak. Searching on Bing produces much more useful real-world results and it won't take people long to figure that out.

Mixed Results
I have several sites that, over the years, I've applied the same SEO techniques to... some are now impossible to find on Google, others are a notch or two higher... explain that... same techniques, same basic treatment, different results... what's more... some of the sites that have increased only consists of a few pages and have not been updated in ages... one is now on the first page!

Is Penguin Over?
As I said, I have some sites that were not affected... I did the same optimization on them and used the same link building strategies that I used on the sites that are now buried. Some of these have not been updated or modified in years... they still rank the same. I've read that Google is not finished rolling out Penguin. So maybe they're not done, or, maybe that's Google's way of saying, uh, we need to work on this update some it sucks.

What Do We Do Now for SEO?
Hold tight. Don't do anything rash. In my SEO course I state that Google likes to play "chicken", or, at least it appears so. I don't recommend doing anything until you've tracked the current situation for several weeks... SEO is slow business, with no overnight solutions. I've started two small tests on two sites... just to see what happens. I'm not changing much and I'm not changing anything on the rest of my sites for a few more weeks. I want to see what happens. I've seen in the past when either Google, or I, have made changes, that I've had a major drop that lasted a few weeks to suddenly end with my return to the first page (that's the "chicken" part... seeing if you'll blink and start changing everything).

I've already had someone contact me from a company that had placed a comment on this blog back in 2008 asking to have their link back to their web site removed. They said they were trying to fix all their inbound links. I replied that this is a PR4 site with pretty clean outbound links and no spammy junk... were they sure? They replied yes. So I deleted their comment and link. It's not going to help them though - I see it as a rash mistake on their part, probably at the hands of a high paid "consultant".

Recovery?
In the past, I made some mistakes with a few sites and Google (as well as Bing [MSN at that time], and Yahoo!) all pushed the sites way, way down in rankings... once I realized that I'd inadvertently made this HUGE blunder, I fixed it... it took a couple of MONTHS before Google relented and returned the sites to where they were ranking previously (I think Bing and Yahoo! were much faster on the return or didn't punish me at all). So remember, any attempt at a fix or modification to your site, or linking strategy, will not show a change overnight, the next week, or possibly the next month. Like I said above, SEO is a process of patience.

I'll make more posts as I track my two experiments and learn more about this really bad "update" from Google.

Until Next Time,
Fred

The most insideous aspect of Pnguin, if true, is that it penalizes sites for inbound links from what Google considers suspect websites. No problem, except that it is a perfect blueprint for competitors to engage in negative SEO practices.

Not a good thing for the Internet.

As you noted, it appears that the SERPS are now full of less than useful sites for many search terms. I may have an axe to grind, as one of my sites was whacked.

The site in question is full of highly useful, on target, and original content, which for the last 2 - 3 years ranked at the top of Google. Not so much now, but at least there is much less useful content occupying it's previous spot.

Good advice, but I cracked under the pressure and went ballistic in nuking potentially questionable links from my own related domains. I even went so far as to send Google a Penguin feedback form pointed to a search query that has turned to junk. I know, I know, that is like asking for way too much scrutiny, but they need to see how awful some of these results have become. I care as a webmaster, but also as a searcher, and I don't mind as much if I'm being outranked by good info.

For the query in question, only about 2 of the top 10 results had relevant (and up to date) information - and suddenly there is a whole network of one-page domains built from unreadable, spun content that are ranking in the top 20. Somewhere on page 3 is my URL that used to be in the top six, as well as the other sites that used to rank by virtue of providing more info than a thin sales/landing page. It's like Google accidentally decided to reward the people who ignored every bit of advice and flaunted the quality guidelines.

Keep calm, carry on, and wait until Google realizes their mistake? Great advice, and I wish I could afford that, but the IRS just cleared me out on the 17th! Oh yea, it also probably helps if you've kept active in the meantime, instead of coasting along on momentum...

I haven't noticed a big change on my business blog yet. I haven't really checked my other sites.

As Steve pointed out, the most insidious part of the Penguin update is the ability to conduct negative SEO campaigns against competitors.

It's already being done, and, from what I've read, it actually works. That seems crazy to me.

This update got down 2 of my sites. After days and days and days and days ... of research, i think i found what was the problem. It was "keyword stuffing", by mistake.
I hope they will bring my sites back.

@Steve: one of my site have links from 2 sites, that google i think they consider suspect. I can't manage to get that webmaster to take my link down.
Is there a way to tell google not to take in cosideration that links?

  5. From: Derpina

Penguin is targetted at low quality link profiles just as panda was targetted at the low quality content, both the updates were not actually about 'spam(as we know it)' but practices that are legal but not of good quality!

  6. From Fred...

I'm still tracking my tweaks and will report results when I have enough data. Some things I may not report in a blog post, but only to my email list, so be sure to sign up.

Bogdan - I would not worry about 2 sites... it takes many more than that to rock the cart. Build more good links and you'll be better off than worry about removing a few bad ones.

Derpina - that may be what they were targeting, but Penguin in particular has hurt a lot of quality, valid sites for no consistent reason.

I have not been personally affected by Penguin but I was under the impression its targeted at black Hat SEO - guess I was wrong. I'm reading more and more about people returning to Bing/Yahoo for better results but Still 99% of my traffic comes from Google so until they lose their monopoly I guess we all have to play the game.

From what I heard, here in Brazil the Penguin did not bring major changes such as the Panda. I do not particularly have been very hurt by either of them (thank God), yet I'm being more cautious and distributing the 'power' of my sites and if any are derrrubado by Google others can keep some stability until I can recover .

Penguin update is really disappointing. I can't understand how they can devalue very basic grey hat techniques such as Footer links and profile links.

But allow spammy blog networks and heap of other black hat SEO techniques untouched. Basically all first page ranking websites for our target keyword have spamming back links.

I have really had the pain with this penguin. One fine day, all of a sudden my traffic dipped a lot and I was wondering what went wrong. I was not aware that google had run an update. I had to face the effects of having duplicate content on the site. The penguin hit us real bad and it took more than 2 months to recover.

Luckily the update hasn't affected my main blog much, but I think everybody will just have to be so much more careful in the way they market their blog and build backlinks. Panda and penguin had a strange effect on my sites. Panda improved, slightly, my rankings. Penguin brought them back to their original positions.

    I don't know why obviously.

From what I saw, however, a lot of white hat, hard working SEOs that provide real value have been penalized, while black hatters lives have been simplified.

My solution: I do what I've always did: I generate traffic directly, from Social Media and other content sites, by creating quality content. Any extra organic traffic is nice and good ( but I can live well even without it ).

There seems to be a lot of basic principles all over the web that talks about how to optimize code and getting sites to link to you, but how do we know how the google algorithms actually work with certainty? Do they publish this information? I am looking for a reliable source that describes how things really work. Not just best practices, but step-by-step instructions for delivering real results. This Penguin update is atrocious. My sites that have been up for years on the first page have been clobbered yet I have noticed a trend. There are thousands of fake sites that are now at the top for the keywords I was looking for. It seems what this update has done is rank sites like walmart, JcPenny, facebook, and others higher but has also helped the spammy sites that have EMD to the number 1 position as well. A few other bloggers I know have been killed by this update and they are seeing the same thing. Google is now ranking the sites that advertise on adwords higher while killing others. I thought a monopoly in the US was illegal but it seems when you are Google it is fine. It has turned into a pay to play situation

My site has been affected of google panda and penguin. It was on the first page rank 2 and went down to page 2 and now not in top 100. I am now careful on how to build backlinks in my site.

Google update should not be very close and if update take long time it good for the website owner and critical algorithm strategy is not good enough for marketing of a website.
    Thanks to all

The more Google tries to crack down spammy and creepy website. The more things get worse. Overall Penguin updates are just fine as they also devastated some innocent too.

We recommend not chasing the algorithm, and to create sites that are user-friendly, first and foremost, and that offer share-worthy content. It seems like this is the direction that Google is taking and that it will continue to take.

It looks to me that Bing now operates like Google did before Panda and Penguine updates. Some of my sites are at the number one page on Bing using the old SEO methods and they are not in top 10 pages on Google.

My sites have not been affected at all. As long as you follow the Google guidelines, and create good content you shouldn't be punished... And Bing is not giving me the search results I want. Google is way superior in every way.

Thank you for this. I've been very confused about this Google Panda thingy. I was wondering why my sites are suddenly down the ranking when I'm doing everything right and more. I hope everything will be okay. I hope it won't be too long. Thanks so much.

The penguin update is doing damage to marketers and buyers as well. I also realized that using Bing sometimes help for results but not all the time. In some cases Google gives useful results to users.

I am with you. One of my client earn $3000 per month through Google Adwords but now its not earning anything from it. Google has removed his all keywords from search. Google is one of the most popular brands on internet. Its have monopoly for many things. In world all are using it so we have not any other way to go for, so I suggest you do everything SEO related activities on Google. For good traffic and ranking do more and more marketing on Google Plus and also add +1 button on your site because in internet Google plus is one of the most effective now for Google search ranking.

if seo is handled in a white hat way making links appear as natural to search engine then the effect of penguin is too less else prepare for weird results from google stay safe go natural

I never have seen a big change in my business weblog but. I never have really examined my different other sites.
Since Steve pointed away, the most insidious element of the Penguin update is the ability to run unwanted Search Engine Optimization advertisments against competitors.
It's already being done, and also, from what I've research, it in truth works. Which tends crazy to myself personally.
