Magic Mirror Tricks #1
Life is like looking in one of those trick mirrors that makes you look really tall or really fat or really wavy. It's not always what it appears to be on the surface and quite often if you just look at the surface you'll find that your life ends up being quite less than desirable.
Your life is what you make it to be. When you read stories or watch a movie about someone that hits rock bottom and then turns their life around to achieve astounding greatness, do you wonder how they were able to do that? Do you look at your own life, wishing you could achieve more? We all do. Some people can change course without hitting rock bottom, others have to reach that point of standing on the edge of an abyss before turning around, and still some plunder into the abyss, lost forever.
Like a large ship, a life that's filled with work, family, other activities, and responsibilities cannot turn and change course quickly. I believe that's why some people can't change - they're not willing to derail enough of the status quo to make a difference. Think about the classic movie scene of a twin engine airplane over water that's heavily loaded down, looses an engine, and is too heavy to stay airborne: they start jettisoning everything they can throw out to stay alive and in the air. So it is with a person's life. If you suffer a string of negative events, for example, getting laid off from your job, your wife leaves you, you loose your house, you can begin a downward spiral that heads down quickly and steadily and before long you reach a point where you either fall into the abyss or you come face to face with the fact that you are nothing except what you believe yourself to be.
I think therefore I am - Rene Descartes, 17th century.
The Moody Blues knew it, and quoted Descartes in In The Beginning from the 1969 album On the Threshold Of A Dream.
One is only poor if they choose to be - Dolly Parton. Dolly knew it in 1970 or 1971 when she wrote My Coat of Many Colors.
It ain't no secret - this type of thinking has been around a long time! Read Ron Killian's post over at his blog about "The Secret": www.webweaverproductions.com/self-development/the-secret-its-never-been-a-secret.
Life is sneaky and it's easy to miss the early warning signs that you're not heading down the course you think you are. It's easy to be normal and follow the herd until any course correction takes so much force that you think it's impossible or you're just not willing to do it.
So, Life's Magic Mirror Trick #1 is that we are responsible for our own reality; it just doesn't look like we have that power. We have to see past that mirage before we can turn our lives around.
The lyrics below are from 1975, from Dan Fogelberg.
The Man in the Mirror
The man in the mirror
He keeps getting nearer
But I am not moving
The man in the backstreet
Is holding a track meet
But I will not run.
Someplace inside you a
Seed has been born
You've got to watch it grow
Someplace inside you
A river is waiting to flow
Will you let it go?
Those voices you're hearing
Are never worth fearing
They're only inside you
They'll tempt you and taunt you
They'll help you and haunt you
But don't try to hide.
Sometimes the sun will be
Right at your shoulder
Helping you keep your stride
Sometimes you might have to give up
A piece of your pride
Have you even tried?
The man in the mirror
He keeps getting nearer
But I am not moving
The man in the backstreet
Is holding a track meet
But I will not run.
Someplace inside you a
Seed has been born
You've got to watch it grow
Someplace inside you
A river is waiting to flow
Will you let it go?
- Dan Fogelberg, The Man in the Mirror from his Captured Angel album 1975.
Until next time,
