Update on Google Ranking Algorithm Change
In my post Google On-Page Ranking Algorithm Change? I noted a simple change that normally would have resulted in an increase in rank moved the web page in question from around 15 to the mid 400s. Well, I'm a little embarrassed to admit that I was wrong... the problem was with my software program that I use for tracking. Google DID change something, at the same time I made the small change to the web page in question, but the change Google made didn't affect ranking, it just affected my data collection process. The change only affected a few of the sites I'm tracking, not all of them, so it was a little hard to pin down.
However, in working on this problem, I still believe that Google has changed something dealing with the same on-page factor I changed. Just not at the time I noticed this false drop in ranking. In my tests to "reverse" the change I made, I also changed the same thing on a few other sites of mine and in a couple of those, I did see an increase in ranking.
I am running another set tests to try and confirm what I think, and will hopefully see the results by next week.

What about Initial Indexing?
I had a reader ask me about the time it takes Google to index a new site. When you first create a new site, Google (as well as any other search engine) has to add it to their indexes before it will show up in the search results. This reader had a couple of new sites that seemed to take a long time, almost two weeks and one of them is not indexed yet. I've had new sites take 2 weeks or a little longer to get indexed, other times I've had it happen in a few days. Linking from a blog that gets updated often will help speed it up, but not always. You can test this in Google by using this syntax in the search box, site:www.pqInternet.com - of course replace www.pqInternet.com with the site you want to check. This command will show you all the pages that Google has indexed for the site.
Until next time,
Fred
