The Frustration of Trying to Make Money Online

December 13, 2007

The Frustration of Trying to Make Money OnlineThe so called "gurus" and their products make it sound so easy. But the fact is most people who try to setup an internet business to make money fail. Plain and simple, they never make more than they spend.

Hyped up sales pages, in addition to a lot of the information that's out there, give the impression that you can make millions overnight. If you've been in the business long enough to have a huge mailing list, thousands of followers, and sharp marketing skills, you certainly can. But NOT if you've just created your first web site and made your first info product. There are always exceptions, but they're few and far between. Just like in so many areas of life, there are no overnight successes. When you think you see an overnight success, what you don't see, are the years of work they spent getting there.

So many people get frustrated when they don't make any sales or get much traffic. They start jumping from idea to idea, from this product to that product, from this "guru's" advice to that "guru's" advice. They buy product after product looking for the one thing that will explode their sales and line their pockets with cash. Finally they just throw in the towel and give up, very frustrated and very disillusioned.

The internet does give you the ability to make a lot of money in a lot of ways. If you're smart and follow those who've paved the way, you can succeed. You can create income streams and not spend every hour of the day working.

Here are 20 points that can help you get there.

  1. Focus on something you believe in and that you are passionate about.

  2. Be consistent.

  3. Be honest.

  4. Take advice with a grain of salt.

  5. Follow the path of a leader, not forum junkies.

  6. Don't give a hoot about Google Page Rank.

  7. Learn basic HTML skills.

  8. Test, Test, Test.

  9. SEO is important but not at the expense of quality.

  10. Links to your site are as important, or even more important than SEO.

  11. An email or subscriber list is just as important as SEO or Links.

  12. Time and interaction with your readers will build links and subscribers.

  13. Quality content is key to getting loyal readers.

  14. Selling quality products is key to getting repeat sales.

  15. Repeat customers are key to long term profit.

  16. It's easier and cheaper to keep a customer than get a new one.

  17. Interact with other bloggers and web sites.

  18. Your number of subscribers, traffic, and inbound links will grow somewhat exponentially.
  19. Leverage the work of others.

  20. Don't buy every "Internet Marketing" product that hits your inbox.

In future posts, I'll expand on each of these points.
Until next time,
Fred

You're right on Fred. Overnight success is a myth for the most part. You rarely hear about the journey...just the arrival.

Thanks for the list! Setting realistic goals and celebrating small successes along the way should help too.

I think #20 is one of the most important (at least it was for me). When I started really getting into internet business, I was buying everything I could get my hands on and was never focusing long enough on ANYTHING and kept jumping from one thing to another. It is one of the worst distractions since you feel like you are learning and becoming a better "marketer" the more tools you have. However, all of the tools in the world aren't going to build anything if there is not enough effort, focus, and time invested. - Hill

Fred, You ought to be awarded a medal along with a big fat check.
Too often, as you well know, those 'gurus' claim to have all the answers and say the road to riches is a snap. You buy their product and find that they leave a key ingredient out.
Reminds me of my aunt who made the best dinner rolls on the planet, when she sent me the recipe she left out a key part, and when I asked her about this she just said you must have made a mistake.
No mistake - just not the right info.

    From Fred...

    Hey Mani;
    Thanks, I'll take both!
Seriously, just like your recipe example, some of the omissions are innocent, others are not. Some things are hard to teach except in person and sometimes subtle differences can make a huge difference in success.

Hope to see you stop by often!

Great list Fred. Glad to see someone being honest about online business rather than lying about "how easy" it is. Like any real business, unless you are cheating and manipulating people, online business takes hard work and time just like any other business. On my blog (www.brentriggsblog.com) I try to have the same type of honesty after being duped for a while by all the get-rich-quick snakes that are all too common concerning online business. - Brent

I was impressed by the way you teach us point #7 with your video pages. Two tumbs up, Fred, really!!!

I haven't earned anything online, yet, but I'm sure I will if I follow your guide in this page

    Thanks again Fred...from Indonesia!

I've been really surprised how much bad advice - or old advice - is regurgitated time after time. I still see so-called experts recommending posting on blogs to get backlinks despite most having nofollow tags, for example.

Thanks for keeping up the quality level.

    Best

    Thank you Fred,

You have gathered both knowledge and experience in one place. I find in this blog what do both frustrated and successful internet marketers need.

Making money online is what every body loves and needs, but this will remain a nice dream and will never resolve bills, unless Internet marketing techniques, concepts, tips, and practices are fully and constantly applied. Your 20 guidance Points are a must follow for everyone looking to make his life better through Internet.

    Success And Regards,
    Sinela
